Peerless Oil Boilers: WBV, EC, WB90 and WV-DV
You get a cast iron boiler with a flame retention burner and parts that every Long Island supply house carries. Peerless residential oil boilers come in these lines:
- Series WBV: the main residential oil boiler, cast iron, in water or steam trim, with inputs from 84 to 273 MBH. ENERGY STAR listed and certified for biodiesel blends up to B20.
- Series EC and ECT: the larger cast iron oil boiler, water or steam, with inputs up to 420 MBH for bigger houses, also B20 certified. The ECT version carries a tankless coil for domestic hot water.
- Series WB90: a water-only cast iron oil boiler.
- Series WV-DV: a direct-vent oil boiler with a sealed combustion burner, for houses with no usable chimney.
- Pinnacle Oil: a stainless steel condensing oil boiler with sealed combustion and direct venting, for the highest oil efficiency.
The WBV and EC are the ones that go into most Long Island replacements, because they drop into the footprint of the boiler they replace and vent into the existing chimney. Domino installs all of them and services the older Peerless boilers still running, including the JOT and the earlier WBV generations.
Peerless Gas Boilers
For gas houses and oil to gas conversions, Peerless offers the cast iron MI, MI-e and MI-x chimney-vented water boilers, the Series 63 cast iron gas steam boiler, the PSCII and Cast 92 sealed-combustion cast iron boilers, and the PureFire stainless steel condensing boiler, which also comes as the PBC combi for heat and hot water in one unit. The Peerless Partner indirect water heater pairs with any of them.
Common Peerless Boiler Problems and Their Causes
Most of what fails on a Peerless is bolted to the boiler rather than cast into it. What Domino technicians see most:
- No heat with the burner locked out: a worn nozzle, sooted cad cell or weak igniter, which is a burner parts repair on any oil boiler.
- An ECT or older WBV with a tankless coil giving lukewarm water: the coil has limed up, or the coil plate gasket is weeping.
- Relief valve dripping: a waterlogged expansion tank pushing the pressure past 30 psi.
- A steam WBV or EC banging or flooding: the low water cutoff or pressuretrol needs service, or there is sludge in the near-boiler piping.
- Water between the sections on an older boiler: an aged section seal, usually after the boiler ran dry or took cold feed water while hot.
- A PureFire or Pinnacle locking out: a condensate trap, igniter or flame sensor on the condensing side, which is a different set of parts from a cast iron boiler.
Peerless Boiler Warranty
PB Heat warrants its residential boilers against manufacturing defects for one year from installation, the cast iron sections of its residential water boilers for the lifetime of the original owner at the original address, and the sections of its residential steam boilers through the tenth year. Both section warranties depend on registering the boiler and on installation by a heating contractor, and Peerless describes them as full-cost rather than prorated. Five and ten-year extended parts and labor plans are sold through the installing contractor. The terms are published on peerlessboilers.com and come with the boiler.
Peerless Boilers in Long Island Homes
A Peerless WBV is a straightforward fit for the typical Long Island oil house: a masonry chimney already in place, baseboard already piped, and a Beckett, Riello or Carlin burner the trucks already carry parts for. The water-or-steam trim means the same line serves a 1950s cape with baseboard and a 1920s colonial with radiators. For a house with a chimney that cannot be relined, the WV-DV vents through a wall instead, and for a gas house the PureFire is the condensing step up.
Peerless Boiler Installation and Replacement
Every Peerless installation begins with a free visit and a written price. The technician works out the right size from the house, looks at the chimney and the existing piping, and picks the line that fits. On the day of the job the old boiler goes out with the new one coming in, and the burner is set with combustion instruments before the technician leaves. Wisetack financing is available, subject to its terms; the boiler replacement page lists what moves the price up or down.
Peerless Boiler Repair and Annual Service
A repair visit is $189 plus the parts, which are quoted before they go in, at any hour and with nothing to sign. Once a year the $219 tune-up puts in a new nozzle, filter and strainer, vacuums the sections and flue passages and sets the burner, and that yearly visit also satisfies the inspection condition in the Peerless warranty. The pricing page has the full list.
